My rock is about the ocean, which is of significant importance to the Maori people. It also celebrates Matariki week, which is the seven stars and the sea. The picture is of a Maori Girl on a boat travelling the seas and reaching for the stars of Matariki.

In my rock painting for Matariki, I incorporated the scenic views of Fox Glacier and the constellation of Matariki. The mountains are pointing upwards as if they are reaching for the stars. To me, this resembles my goals and aspirations to achieve highly in the new year, as it marks a new beginning. This is what Matariki means to me.

My rock is representing the stars of Matariki. The stars are inside a whale because I like the ocean and its wonders.

Tapawera Area School My ideas for incorporating Matariki in my rock painting, I wanted to show the land of New Zealand and the beauty of it. As well as having a New Zealand Native bird involved to indicate our beautiful nature, all together I want my painting to be shown as our home and how we're connected and what keeps us connected with our annual celebration.
